Gone Hooking
Medium: Fibre/Textile Art
Gone Hooking is a group of traditional rug hookers from the Lower Mainland and area. They have met weekly since 2004, when Freda Jackson, who had lived in Nova Scotia, moved back to Maple Ridge and instructed a few friends in the art of traditional rug hooking; the group grew from there.
The basic technique is to hold a thin strip of wool on the backside of a piece of woven fabric, such as burlap, linen, or monk’s cloth, drawing small loops of the strip through an opening of the weave using a hand-held hooking tool. Even loops are the make of a rug hooker’s skill; it’s a very simple task. A pattern is drawn on your backing before starting. New or recycled wool or yarn can be used. Most of the group use wool, as it is extremely hard-wearing and resists dirt. This art was introduced to the east coast of Canada by immigrants coming to North America.
