Maureen Wouterloot
Medium: Fibre/Textile Art
Maureen is a locally trained textile artist with a University of Victoria, Studio Arts degree. She transforms, through couture sewing and some machine assembly, mass-produced 50's, 60's, and 70's adornments (that have had a previous purpose) into beautiful, practical hats and purses.
Working in a "quilting" style process with vintage fabrics in her home studio, she designs flat pattern shapes "after" she creates the initial inspirational accessory. Arranging the expressive colours, textures, patterns, and angular shapes of the individual men's ties to her liking, she then drapes the composition on the head form and pins them together. She hand sews the graceful curve that forms from the bias construction of each tie and incorporates boning (in the hats) and buckram (in the purses) to add structure and volume that combine execution and mixed style eras into one exciting fashion statement.
